European society is ‘ageing’ with increasing numbers and proportions of older people in our communities.  European countries need to view this positively rather than seeing it as a threat to our economies.  To achieve this we need these older people to continue to be active in employment, family, our communities and in wider society. Only be increasing and enhancing their opportunities to engage in learning to better understand their own lives, their potential and the contexts of society around them can we make best use of their experiences, skills and talents. With this population change it is vital that we ensure that harmony remains between generations and that there is a better understanding of what ageing means – personally and to the society we live in.


It is essential therefore that there is training for those committed to working with older people to enable them to continue to fulfil a role confidently and competently in the world around them.


This course therefore fits in with the EU priorities: “Professionalization of professional and volunteer staff” - not only in helping to create more professional staff but in focusing on ageing as a key policy area and where more educational activities should be provided.


The seminar should stimulate and motivate educational staff to organize, moderate and facilitate later life learning. It should make them more confident in working with senior citizens and older people and at the same time creating intergenerational and intercultural learning locations and activities. It will allow participants the opportunity to develop their own knowledge and methodological skills for learning in later life.

The essential element of the training course is that it will build on the existing experiences of the delegates attending to help us all to become better teachers, facilitators and managers. The team of trainers will encourage and stimulate participants to reflect on their own experiences, learn from colleagues and return home with fresh contacts, renewed confidence and competence.


The course is geared for those with considerable experience in later life in diverse settings as well to those relatively new in the discipline.


Over the last ten years the Cyprus Adult Education Association has pioneered or successfully organized a wide range of seminars and in service training courses. Since 2008 the focus has been on Learning in Later life and Intergenerational cooperation with more than 200 participants from 28 European countries took participating.  It is this experience that underpins this new programme – offering new delegates the opportunity to benefit from the learning the trainers themselves have been fortunate and privileged to acquire but also to encourage previous delegates to return to better reflect on their achievements since their participation and to further enhance their professionalization.


For those who have attended any of the Cyprus seminars the last 5-6 years therefore this training programme will be particularly invaluable in allowing further reflection, evaluation and sharing on how those participants utilized and benefited from the training. The breath of experience and interests represented in the seminars are a key strength which allows all participants - trainees and trainers to learn from and utilize.


Trainers

Jumbo Klercq. Jumbo has since 1989 been active in a wide range of transnational projects and is senior development officer for Odyssee, Vice –President of EAEA and second secretary of ICIP. He was coordinator of the European Education network (EEN) and the Pan-European forum of the education for the Elderly (PEFETE) which preceded and directly led to his current involvement in the ForAge network. He has been involved in the training of trainers in many countries.


Jim Soulsby. Jim has worked in the field of Learning in later life for 30 years. Jim developed international interest in specialist educational opportunities for older people.


He is currently the facilitator of the EU Grundtvig ForAge network is co-editor of the International Journal for Education and Ageing. Jim also works or provides advice on a range of older learners’ initiatives.


Klitos Symeonides, President of the Cyprus Adult Education Association, manager in numerous Grundtvig and Leonardo projects, professional Adult Educator( MA in Adult Education), ex School Inspector and ex Grundtvig National Agency. Trainer in numerous seminars and courses; and a trainer for the Certification and Evaluation of trainers in business, companies, associations and similar bodies in Cyprus.

Preparation

Preparation - participants will


  • receive fuller background information on the training themes
  • be asked to fill a questionnaire about their experiences & expectations in relationship to the seminar and circulate these by e-mail to all the other participants
  • have the opportunity of exchanging information, ideas, experiences and networking during the seminar.

Objectives

Objectives - to reinforce the place and value of later life learning


  • to build on previous and current EU funded cooperative initiatives to better understand their successes and failures, to assist sustainability, and allow others to build on them
